Advertising Idea($) for You

One advertising idea that could change EVERYTHING… is that what you are looking for? That is great but let’s make sure that you have all of the PREREQUISITES in place first… great sales and marketing is USELESS without a great product or service and so I am assuming that you have that. Does QUALITY permeate everything you do? Excellent! How about your customer SERVICE and SUPPORT programs? If those measure up then perhaps you do have the building blocks in place that will make great advertising worthwhile

People just LOVE “silver bullets”, overnight successes and outright MAGIC that they are willing to believe can make all of their problems go away and turn them into an overnight SUPERSTAR. It is the same with sales and marketing: if only we can find the right sales people/ model… if only we can put together the right marketing campaign… if only we could come up with the right advertising idea. My question to you is: do you have all of your PS and QS in order? By this I simply mean product, service, quality and support. If you do have these things in place then, yes, by all means, let’s talk advertising

What is a Great Advertising Idea?

Do you have ideas about what CONSTITUES great advertising? Perhaps you are like me with a, “I know it when I see it” approach. Or maybe you are trying to solicit a SPECIFIC emotional reaction from your audience. Whatever the case, it pays to “begin with the end in mind” like Stephen Covey wrote in, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”. Try and imagine what kind of ad you are looking to come up with or what kind of effect you want it to produce

In coming up with great advertising idea it pays to look at other advertising in general and think about what inspires YOU. are there certain themes or styles or even creative ideas that you can borrow from? Googling “creative advertising” will return a host of web pages with alluring titles like, “50 Great Creative Advertisements”. Pull a few of these up and go through them trying to make pointers about things that you like and do not, things that grab you and what turns you off

What Powers a Great Advertising Idea?

There are 2 basic components to a great advertisement which are your unique selling proposition (USP) and the IDEA that you use in order to communicate this (within the space of an INSTANT) to your target audience.  I have written in detail about more of the technical components (such as a GIMMICK) that go into creating a good advertisement but really, if you have your USP and a good idea then you are off to the races

The REAL question is: what is your USP? What are you trying to communicate about yourself, your company, your product or your service which is UNIQUE and differentiates you from everyone else? This is the real key to creating a great advertisement. It is like the SCRIPT in a movie from which everything else flows. Unfortunately, people often look for fancy “hooks” and other gimmicks without giving thought first and foremost to what they should be trying to communicate in the magic moment

What is Your Advertising Idea About?

Getting down to the nitty-gritty of it, your USP is where you should spend the most amount of time and effort in the whole exercise of coming up with great advertising. In fact, revisiting what your USP is and how to communicate this meaningfully to your customers is what sales and marketing should be all about. As with everything else in business, you should begin with the END in mind (another of Mr. Covey’s teachings, of course). This pertains to business and product development as well as messaging

There are two ways of going about how to figure out what your USP is. The first is what YOU think it is and the second is what your CUSTOMERS think it is. Remember that just because a feature is “new” and “improved” or “revolutionary” or “innovative” does not mean anything. The REAL question is what value it provides your customers. Ask your customers informally if you cannot do market research. Ask them what sets you apart from other’s in their mind. This is your positioning and the basis of your USP

Your USP does not have to be anything completely extraordinary or surprising or anything like that. It may simple be that you deliver faster than any of your competitors or have the best customer service or something like that. What is important is that it should be UNIQUE to your business and MEANINGFUL to your customers. Once you have figured out what your USP is, it is only a matter of time before the word gets out. Remember that the “greatest” advertising is of little or no value if it cites the wrong USP

How Do You Get an Advertising Idea?

When author Stephen King is asked where he got a certain idea for a story from he says something like, “Umajumboo”. He has a made up word he uses and tells people that this is where his ideas come from. The point of the whole thing is that no one knows where good ideas come from. All we know is what they LOOK like once they are here! If you are interested in jogging your creative juices there are plenty of books and programs and exercises that you can research and try out in your spare time. Meditation works…

With regards to creating great advertising the key to the whole thing is REPETITION and RESEARCH and BRAINSTORMING. You keep having to come up with and try new ideas. You keep having to ask and think about what makes your business and customer and (finally) advertisement TICK. You may think that you have come up with something really special only to have it fall flat and not work. The name of the game is to keep at it trying every and all means – within reason – at your disposal until you hit upon the results you are looking for. THAT long process is “overnight success”
