Viral Marketing Takes Work!!!

What a great write-up of some of the 1000s of examples out there of companies that have used the power of viral marketing successfully! (That being said, there are plenty of others that have failed miserably, probably more so than the successes...).

It seems obvious that a lot going in to creating a "viral" effect when it is done properly and is not just sheer luck. I mean, look at some of these movie producers and whatnot and the lengths that they go to in terms of creating hundreds of websites and whatnot like you have written about.

Thanks for the great post, Marty!

You are right in that, just like fame and fortune, the correct application of Internet viral marketing principles takes a lot of hard work. The wrong way to go about it is to spend an inordinate amount of time and effort trying to create the perfect sales and marketing campaign that will magically go viral. Rather, the goal should be to internalize quality and creativity as a day-to-day process and continue to produce interesting, informative and entertaining content so that if you do go viral, your "overnight success" is not overnight at all but the result of long days, weeks and months of sustained effort.
